| Academy Avenue Primary School 2011 – 2012 2011-2012 Calendar.pdf Dear Families, Welcome back to a new school year! I hope that you all had a wonderful summer and are ready for another exciting year! It is an honor and a privilege to serve you and your children as principal. I look forward to sharing this school year with you and ensuring that every child has a safe and successful learning experience. Looking for something exciting to do this year? Our morning playground, cafeteria, and library would more than welcome volunteers to help out. Just a reminder that children should arrive to school no earlier than 8:55 A.M. A superb academic program combined with excellent classroom instruction and parental support offers an environment where excellence is achieved for children and their families. Our parent council is very active and plays a vital role in the success of the Academy Avenue students. I hope that you will consider lending a hand with this terrific organization. Thank you for all of your support and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, comments or concerns. Enjoy the last few days of summer. Sincerely, Jennifer Whipple Principal ◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊◊ The best gift you can give your children besides good manners is good memories……

| FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL
September 6th At 9:10, please feel free to walk your child to his or her class for this day. Grades K, 1, and 2 enter from the lower playground and Grades 3 and 4 from the top playground. For this one day, you may park on the top playground to see that your children get to their assigned classrooms. Reminders… ********** Start Time The Primary Schools day begins at 9:10 and ends at 3:15. First Bell 9:10 A.M. Late Bell 9:20 A.M. End of Day 3:15 P.M.

********** Morning Procedures
All students will enter through the lower playground. Students in Grades 3 & 4 will proceed up the stairs to the top playground. In inclement weather, all students will enter through the front cafeteria door and the main front entrance. Students coming from Broad St. Place may enter through the back doors on the upper level. Parking will not be allowed around the circle before school or at dismissal time. School personnel will be on duty to supervise at 9:05 A.M. All grade one and two walkers entering from Broad Street should proceed to the lower playground. When dropping off by vehicle, please: 1. Keep cars in a single line. Children should NEVER cross traffic. 2. Children should NEVER cross traffic. 3. Please allow children to exit car by themseves on the right side and proceed directly to the lower playground. Please allow children to exit car by themselves on the right side and proceed directly to the lower playground. ********** Off to a Good Start Research shows that having a good breakfast helps children to perform at their best. We strongly encourage that all children have a healthy breakfast. Oftentimes children come to school without the benefit of a good breakfast, and struggle through the morning. Also, a snack helps to keep the momentum going. In addition, a good night’s sleep is certainly in order on school nights.
********** | | Lunches
Children may bring or purchase a lunch in our cafeteria. Milk is available daily, and starting in October, ice-cream available on Fridays. Please refrain from dropping off special lunches for students. This requires additional tasks for others as well as makes other children feel badly that they do not receive a special lunch. Children at this age do not fully understand. No child will ever be without a lunch. If forgotten, we will provide a lunch and send home a reminder for payment. ********** AFTERNOON Parents picking up children may drive to the top playground. Vehicles must arrive by 3:10 and park only on the upper playground. Students being picked up will exit by the rear door. You should meet your child at the door and walk them from the school to your car. You will be able to leave after the buses, vans and walkers, usually between 3:20-3:25 P. M. A signal will be given by the adult on duty. Please be patient and wait your turn. If you are parked in the center area, do not move your car until the cars parked by the road or back row have been given the signal to go. ********** Dismissals Please send in a note when dismissing your child. This helps to remind the office and the teacher of when during the day this will occur. Please do not dismiss your child early to beat the traffic. This is disruptive to the classroom when teachers are assigning homework, checking on students, passing out notices or completing other tasks. When a child is dismissed to someone other than a parent, we require identification and signature for release. Also, please complete the enclosed dismissal form for each of your children and return it to school. ********** Exiting ALL children exit through the side doors onto the lower playground at the end of the day. Please DO NOT wait at the front of the building. Pulling your child from the line is disruptive, and often leads to being unable to locate a child if necessary. This procedure is done for the safety of all children. ********** Bus Dismissal
Please send a note to school if your child is NOT taking the bus home or of any other change in plans. Do not leave this responsibility to your child. If a note is not received, your child will take the bus home as normal. ********** After School Activities After school activities are great opportunities for children to participate in new and exciting programs. We encourage all children to join Brownies, Cub Scouts, or other enrichment programs when offered. However, we strongly suggest that a calendar of these events is posted and reviewed weekly so that children know what days these special events occur, and who will be picking them up. Uncertainty at the end of the day, wondering where to go and the need to verify the arrangements causes added confusion for children by creating the need to make a phone call, oftentimes tying up the phone unnecessarily.
| | Reminders…
Children’s Treasures Please help us keep personal belongings safe. Oftentimes children want to bring a special toy or gift to school to show other children, play with, or wear. Other children often are tempted to look at, or borrow these items and forgot to return them. We are unable to be responsible for the loss of these items. If a child brings an expensive item to school, the school cannot be responsible for its safekeeping. ********** Vacations Studies have shown that there is a correlation between the attendance of a child and his /her success. Although family vacations are difficult to schedule with the school calendar, we encourage that children not be absent from school for an extended period of time. Please notify the school in such cases. *** Absences All absences must be followed with a note from a parent. When a child is absent, please call the school between 8:30 – 9:15 A.M. After attendance is taken in the classroom, follow-up telephone calls will be made to inquire of a student’s whereabouts. All students must be accounted for, and failure to locate a child will require intervention of our safety officer. ********** Lost and (never) Found Each year we donate to organizations wonderful clothing left behind by children. Everything from jackets, book bags, and sneakers can be found in our collection. Please help by putting your child’s initials inside so that we may return them to the rightful owner. ********** Consistency We as adults are flexible and can change our routine at any given moment. Children at this age are still dependent on routine and consistency. Bedtime, meal times, and school time help to provide stability while learning and growing. It is also important to maintain a daily routine of comings and goings. Children who are unsure of what is going to happen at the end of the day worry and become anxious. Please help your child by maintaining a routine at dismissal time. ********** | |

Volunteers
Have an extra hour to spare? Volunteers are needed on a daily basis in our cafeteria, and library. A notice will be coming home in the near future. Please let us know if you are available. MEDICATION POLICY The Weymouth Public Schools health Services encourages that medication be administered before and/or after school if possible. When medication is needed during school hours there must be a physician’s order and a parental permission form with the medication or it can not be given. Medication must be delivered to the school in a pharmacy or manufacturer labeled container by the parent, guardian, or responsible adult. (Medications are not accepted in such things as plastic bags.) No child is permitted to bring medication to school Please contact Mrs. Maloney, our school nurse, for the proper forms, which must accompany all medications. **********
